Our Story

How it all started...

Second Baptist Church had its beginnings in a prayer meeting at a home in the Adrian Mill Village.  The late Rev. M.L. Barnes then held a revival in what was called the park, and services were held for years in the Adrian Chapel, with interest growing in forming a church.

The congregation petitioned the Presbytery of the Gaston Baptist Association to organize the chapel into a Baptist church in the spring of 1938 with 19 charter members.  The Presbytery approved the church on May 29, 1938, and called it Adrian Madora Baptist.

The members held their first homecoming on October 1, 1950, at which time the note on the church building was paid in full.  The church then voted to start a building fund for the purpose of building a new church.  On November 4, 1951 the congregation changed the name of the church to Second Baptist Church of Mount Holly.

On July 7, 1953 a groundbreaking ceremony was held at Rankin Avenue with the foundation being laid on July 13, 1953.  Only 5 months later the church moved into its new building on December 22, and by 1957, the note was burned, freeing the church of all debt.

Ground was broken again on May 1, 1960 for an educational building that was completed in 1970.  The church purchased the adjacent property in 1963, which they would use to build a parsonage in 1972; later to construct a ball field, a parking lot, and eventually a fellowship hall.

Expanding the vision...

The church purchased 12 acres at the corner of Rankin Avenue and Catawba Avenue on May 29th, 1989, opposite the former church grounds.   On April 15, 1998 the church broke ground for the current worship center and educational classrooms, which included a 700 seat auditorium.  The first service was held on December 12, 1999, and a dedication service was held on January 8, 2000.

In May 2002, a daycare facility was added called the Bee Hive.  The current name of the daycare facility is Second Baptist Daycare and the newest building was added due to the growth of the daycare in 2015.

Where we are headed...

In these constantly changing and uncertain times the one thing we can continue to be sure of is the unchanging Lord. We know that He is in control and we will continue to teach the truth of the gospel while reaching out to the world around us. We would love for you and your family to come and contribute to the story of Second Baptist Church.
